A business process is stuck In Progress with no awaiting person

Problem

The BP shows as In Progress but no one appears in the awaiting party, so nothing can be actioned.

Solution

This usually means a step is routed to an empty security group or an unfilled role. Inspect the process history, then use Reassign Tasks or a mass rescind.

Open the business process event and review Process History. Look for the step that has started but has no awaiting person — it is almost always routed to a role-based security group where the role is unassigned for that organisation.

Assign the role for the relevant organisation and the step will route immediately. If the organisation should not have the role at all, edit the business process definition to add a fallback group or to make the step conditional.

For a backlog of stuck events, use the Business Process Exceptions report to identify all impacted transactions, then run Mass Operation Management or Reassign Tasks so you do not have to touch them one at a time.
